‍

What Is Altruist?

Altruist is a digital custodian and technology platform built for independent RIAs. It combines custody, trading, portfolio management, reporting, and billing in one system, which allows small and mid-sized firms to run lean operations without stitching together multiple vendors. Its low-cost, technology-first approach has made it especially popular with newer and fast-growing practices.

‍

Why More RIAs Are Using Altruist

Advisors who move to Altruist tend to cite a few recurring reasons: a modern interface, streamlined onboarding, integrated trading and billing, and pricing that suits firms of every size. As independent RIAs look to scale without adding operational headcount, a unified platform becomes a practical choice. If you want to understand which advisors are open to new technology and where they are located, AdvizorPro AI Search lets you find and segment them in seconds.

Altruist AUM Across the Top 20: Key Insights

Together, these 20 firms report about $6.6 billion in assets at Altruist, with a median of roughly $255 million per firm.

Altruist is often the primary custodian rather than a side account. Fifteen of the 20 firms hold at least 75% of their total AUM at Altruist, ten hold 90% or more, and six report nearly all of their assets there.

These are lean practices. Eighteen of the 20 firms have fewer than 25 employees, and several run with teams of fewer than five. That fits the platform's appeal to firms that want to scale without heavy operations.

‍

Altruist's Growing Presence in the RIA Industry

In August 2026, Vanguard announced an agreement to acquire Altruist, which it first backed as an investor in 2020. According to Vanguard's announcement, Altruist is expected to operate as a standalone business with its leadership, brand, and advisor focus intact, and the deal is expected to close later in 2026 pending regulatory approvals. Vanguard did not disclose the price, but Financial Planning reported a deal value of more than $4 billion, and InvestmentNews covered the strategy behind it.

Beyond the deal, custodian choice is shifting as younger, technology-oriented firms enter the market and established practices reconsider their infrastructure. Altruist is increasingly part of that conversation, and the firms above show that it is no longer limited to startups. Several have more than $300 million in assets on the platform, and the largest approaches $1.1 billion. To see how this fits with demographic change across the industry, read our Advisor Demographics Report.

‍

Closing Thoughts

For independent RIAs, the custodian relationship shapes cost, client experience, and growth capacity. Altruist gives small teams access to institutional-quality tools without a large operational footprint, which helps them compete for clients against larger firms. For vendors and asset managers, the firms that adopt it early are often the same advisors who are open to new products, new data, and new partners.
